Understanding the purpose and results of rhinoplasty surgery
- Posted on: Oct 15 2022
Rhinoplasty, also referred to casually as a “nose job,” is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures performed today. It can be done to change the shape of your nose, improve its function or both. Rhinoplasty can also be done for reconstructive purposes, to correct birth defects or injury-related deformities. Dr. Wayne P. Foster of Foster MD is one of the top plastic surgeons in the counties of Monmouth and Ocean and is open to help patients of Toms River and Manasquan, NJ achieve their desired results.
How to start the process of undergoing nose surgery
If you’re considering rhinoplasty, it’s important to choose a board-certified plastic surgeon with experience performing the procedure. During your initial consultation, our surgeon will assess your individual goals and facial features to determine whether rhinoplasty is right for you. Once you’ve decided to proceed with surgery, your surgeon will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan.
What happens during the surgical procedure?
Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia. During the procedure, Dr. Wayne P. Foster will make incisions either inside your nose or along the columella, the strip of tissue separating the nostrils. Through these incisions, your surgeon will then sculpt and reshape the underlying bone and cartilage to achieve your desired results. Finally, he closes the incisions using sutures or skin adhesives.
What to expect after surgery
After rhinoplasty, you can expect some swelling and bruising around your eyes that will gradually subside over the course of a few weeks. You might also experience some nasal congestion as a result of the splints placed inside your nose during surgery. These splints will be removed a few days after surgery, at which point you’ll be able to see your new nose.
