Skin-healthy foods to start eating this New Year

Skin Care Treatments Wall NJEating healthy is one of the top resolutions that Americans make every New Year. But did you know that the benefits of eating right extend to your skin? Our skin is the largest organ in our body and deserves some serious TLC every day. Not only does it act us our main defense against germs, but it also ensures that important fluids stay in our bodies. Experts agree that healthy habits like eating right, not smoking, and avoiding tanning from a young age will pay off years down the road. This year, in addition to the skin care services, provide by Dr. Foster, try to incorporate some of the following foods into your diet to improve your skin.

Antioxidants

Many studies suggest that vitamin A, C, and E (major antioxidants) can aid in decreasing the amount of sun and environmental damage we receive throughout our lives. Here are some of the top food sources of these key antioxidants: orange juice, grapefruit juice, strawberries, kiwis, red and green peppers, tomatoes, vegetable juice, broccoli, kale, nuts, olives, seeds, spinach, and asparagus.

‘Smart’ Fats

Omega-3 fatty acids are brimming with goodness for your skin. Next time you’re at the grocery store, add the following to your shopping cart for a healthy dose of omega-3s: fish, flaxseed, walnuts, and eggs. Monosaturated fats have also been associated with better skin. For your daily dose of this healthy fat try avocados, almonds, hazelnuts, and almond oil.

Whole Foods

When you eat well for your skin, you also guard against cancer and heart disease. It is no wonder whole foods are so great for your skin since they also contain high levels of antioxidants, phytochemicals, and monosaturated fats. These types of foods include vegetables, yogurt, nuts, multigrain bread, water, legumes, and eggs.  One study showed that participants who ate a whole foods diet had less premature skin aging and less wrinkling than those who ate a diet high in red, processed meats, butter, potatoes, and sugar.
