What Is Cheek Augmentation?

Cheek augmentation (also know as submalar augmentation) is a cosmetic procedure that is used to enhance the cheeks on a patient’s face that are lacking sufficient facial contour. At Foster MD, we use Voluma, a cheek filler that lasts up to 2 years provides a beautiful, custom result that ranges from subtle to exotic. It is safe, much less expensive, and reversible.

What Concerns Can Cheek Augmentation Correct?

Submalar augmentation is often used in patients whose cheeks have a sunken, hollow look. Submalar augmentation can fill this hollow sign of aging below the cheekbones and fill out the patient’s face.

What are the benefits of non-surgical cheek augmentation?

As we age, our body produces less and less collagen every year. Since collagen is responsible for the structural support framework under our skin, declining levels create various classic signs of aging: development of wrinkles and lines, thinning skin, and sunken, flattened cheeks. Throw in the slackening of underlying support tissues and our former plump, firm cheeks are now flat and lifeless.

That’s where Dr. Foster can help. By injecting dermal filler into the sunken areas of the cheeks, patients can have rejuvenation without the trauma and recovery of either facelift surgery or cheek implant surgery. This returns contour and definition to the area, taking 10 years or more off the patient’s facial age. Dr. Foster’s double-board certification gives him extensive knowledge of facial anatomy and experience to create more defined cheeks using only dermal filler injections.

Are there side effects involved with cheek Fillers?

These are low-risk treatments. As with any dermal filler injections, patients may have some redness, slight bruising, swelling, itching, and tenderness at the injection sites. This typically passes within a few hours after your session.

One great thing about non-surgical augmentation with Juvéderm Voluma is that if for some reason you don’t like the look of your results, Dr. Foster can reverse the effects by neutralizing the hyaluronic acid filler with an injection of an enzyme known as hyaluronidase.

Can I combine non-surgical cheek augmentation with other treatments?

Non-surgical cheek augmentation can be combined with many of our other treatments and procedures at Foster MD. For instance, if you want to combine rejuvenated cheeks with rejuvenated eyes, we could add Botox injections for your crow’s feet or frown lines. You could have some unwanted hair removed with our laser hair removal treatments. You could slim the contours of various areas by having CoolSculpting done to remove up to 25 percent of the fat at the treatment site. You could even augment your lips after augmenting your cheeks, as Dr. Foster can use Juvéderm Volbella or Restylane Silk to add definition and shape to thin, non-descript lips.

How long will my Cheek Enhancement Results Last?

Our Foster MD patients love the long duration of their cheek augmentation with Juvéderm Voluma. While duration can vary between patients, we’ve found results last for up to two years. If you come in for occasional touch-ups, Dr. Foster can refine and prolong your results.

Is non-surgical cheek augmentation permanent?

No. Dr. Foster believes that Juvéderm Voluma provides the best results, but these are not permanent. As mentioned above, Voluma provides cheek augmentation for about two years for most patients. After that time your body will begin to absorb the hyaluronic acid in the filler and your cheeks will begin to flatten once again. Another session with Dr. Foster will maintain your results.

Can you reverse cheek fillers?

All Juvéderm fillers, including Voluma, are made from hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the human body that is responsible for hydrating and plumping the skin. It does this by binding with nearby water molecules.

A great thing about these fillers is that they can be neutralized if the patient doesn’t like the look of the injected area, or if a lump develops. All that’s necessary is the second injection of an enzyme, hyaluronidase. This enzyme instantly breaks down the hyaluronic acid and negates the effects of the injected filler.
