The “pouty” full lip has never been more popular and attractive than today. Thinning and retraction of the lips are an integral part of the aging process, while others are just born with thinner lips. The upper and lower lip gradually rolls inward lengthening the distance from the nose to the pink lip. Because people have realized the importance of lips in the aged appearance, lip enhancement and rejuvenation procedures have become important in overall facial rejuvenation and beauty restoration. Many women are also enhancing their lips at a more youthful age to enhance overall beauty.
Lip augmentation is a cosmetic treatment done in our office to increase the size of the lips. At Foster Facial Plastic Surgery, we use injectable fillers such as
Juvederm or
Restylane to augment the lips. During lip augmentation, either just the upper or lower lip can be augmented, or patients may choose to have both done at once.
Prior to treatment, a numbing cream will be applied to the lips for about 15 minutes. Once the area is numb, we will begin injecting the filler of choice. There may still be a slight pinch felt at the time of injection, however, most patients report they did not feel anything uncomfortable during the procedure.
Immediately after treatment, the lips will be swollen. Cold compresses are critical to minimize swelling and should be applied immediately following treatment. This swelling will subside within 24 to 48 hours. At this time, your results of treatment will be visible. A follow-up appointment should be scheduled within 2 weeks of your first treatment for additional filler injections as needed.
For the first 24 hours, it is recommended to avoid excessive smiling and manipulation of the area. You may eat after treatment, however, it is recommended that you choose foods that do not require you to open your mouth too wide. We also recommend that you do not use a straw for the first day or two after injection as this sucking motion could affect your results. Patients may experience bruising at the injection site for up to one week following treatment. It is important to keep your lips hydrated to avoid scabbing.
