Lip Augmentation in Toms River & Manasquan, NJ

Most of us would love to have full, shapely lips. Whether you’ve always been unhappy with your thin lips, or whether they’ve become thinner with the passing years, you’d love to exchange your lips for a fuller, more kissable pair.

But you’re not interested in dermal filler injections every 6 months or so.

There is a way to have fuller lips permanently. It’s a surgical procedure performed by Dr. Foster at our two locations called lip advancement.

What is lip advancement?

Also known as “lip enhancement” or “vermilion advancement,” lip advancement is a surgical procedure whose goal is to expand the visible pink lip tissue. This is done by making an incision along the vermillion border, the sharp demarcation between the lips and the surrounding skin. Depending on the patient, Dr. Foster may make an incision along the upper and lower lip borders. Skin is removed to shorten the distance between the nose and the upper lip and between the lower lip and the chin.

Who is a good candidate for lip advancement?

Good candidates for lip advancement have very thin lips that can be almost invisible when the mouth is closed and the lips set. Candidates may also have tried dermal filler injections but not been satisfied with the obvious plumping and volume increase along with the short duration of their results.

How is lip advancement done?

Studio shot of a beautiful young woman posing against a gray backgroundDuring your consultation, the two of you will discuss just how much more of the pink portion of your lips you would like to expose. To begin your procedure, your lips will be fully numbed. You may also have oral sedation if you choose. Dr. Foster makes an incision along the vermillion border along the top and bottom. He then removes a predetermined amount of skin both above the upper lip and below the lower lip. With the skin removed, the vermillion is pulled outward and upward, and Dr. Foster sutures it into place over the area of the removed skin. This creates the increased size and shape of the lips that the two of you agreed upon during your consultation.

What is recovery like after having lip advancement

Recovery after lip advancement is not overly difficult. Most of your swelling will occur in the first few days, although it can come and go, especially in the evening, for several weeks. Dr. Foster will remove your sutures after seven days. At that point you can apply lipstick to mask your incisions. You can get back to your normal activities in just a couple days, but strenuous exercise or other activity needs to wait for 7 to 10 days.

How painful is my recovery after lip advancement?

These are not overly painful recoveries. You will have available prescription pain medication, but many patients feel over-the-counter Advil or Tylenol sufficiently handles their discomfort.

Your lips will feel tight initially. This is completely normal, as the vermillion tissue has been stretched. This relaxes and is unnoticeable in a few weeks.

How painful is my recovery after lip advancement?

There will be a slight scar along the vermillion border on the upper and lower lip. Full healing of these incisions can take up to an entire year, but they will become less and less noticeable every passing day. Lipstick effectively masks these scars.

Are there any risks involved with lip advancement?

As with any surgery, there are some risks inherent with these procedures. These are minimal, but include infection, asymmetry across your lips, enduring tightness across your lips, and poor incision healing. Thanks to Dr. Foster’s board-certified training, expertise, and experience these are all very rare. These are safe, satisfying procedures for our patients from across coastal New Jersey.

What should I expect for my results from lip advancement?

After just a couple weeks, your swelling should be mostly complete, and you should be able to realize your results. With more of your pink vermillion showing your lips will appear more full, round, and shapely. These are permanent changes that you’ll enjoy for the rest of your life.
