Overview
Have you been looking for a way to completely rejuvenate the way your face looks and feels? By completely renewing your facial skin’s appearance and gently correcting minor flaws here and there, laser resurfacing may be just what you need. And if you’re already sold on the idea, then there’s nowhere better to get your laser resurfacing treatment than FosterMD. With the help of the fantastic Dr. Foster and his exceptional team, laser resurfacing has never been more efficient and effective!
What Is Laser Resurfacing?
Laser resurfacing is that process by which plastic surgeons are able to correct anything from fine wrinkles and sun-damaged skin to age spots and mild acne scarring. This can be approached in two ways, the first of which is with IPL or Intense Pulsed Light treatment.
IPL laser resurfacing involves using a variety of intense wavelengths to correct the issues mentioned above. Dr. Foster will use a state-of-the-art Icon™ aesthetic system to shine these light wavelengths directly onto the area of the epidermis—or top layer of skin—that requires resurfacing. The intensity of the light will then cause the pigmented cells, damaged skin, or hair follicles to slowly break down, making way for your newly rejuvenated face underneath.
The other method by which we can perform our laser resurfacing is through fractional laser treatment. This treatment differs from IPL laser resurfacing in that it targets both the epidermis and dermis (the middle layer of skin). The same Icon™ aesthetic system will be used to direct the laser toward the areas that are in need of resurfacing—however, this method’s laser is divided into hundreds if not thousands of tiny but deeply-penetrating wavelengths. This process similarly breaks down the damaged skin and pigmented cells, but this way takes it a step further. The laser will also pierce into the collagen below your top layer of skin, causing a reaction through which the collagen will begin to be remodeled, and more collagen will be stimulated to form.
Who Can Benefit From Laser Resurfacing?
How Do I Prepare for Laser Resurfacing?
There are a variety of ways you can prepare for laser resurfacing before the day of your treatment. Of course, Dr. Foster will have a thorough conversation with you beforehand to discuss your medical history and post-treatment expectations, as well as to conduct a physical exam to help determine what type of laser resurfacing treatment would suit your skin best.
However, there are some things you may be asked to do at home before the day of treatment, including:
- Cutting out smoking and drinking for two weeks beforehand
- Avoiding excessive exposure to the sun for up to two months
- Taking certain medications depending on the results of your physical exam
- Arranging for a ride home after the treatment to avoid unnecessarily risky driving
What Does Recovery From Laser Resurfacing Look Like?
Laser resurfacing is relatively painless, as most patients indicate little to no pain whatsoever during the treatment. However, there are some side effects that may occur afterward during the recovery process, including:
- Itching, swelling, and redness that can sometimes last a few months
- A brief onset of acne
- The possibility of an infection caused by a flare-up of the herpes virus (patient-specific)
- A darkening of the treated skin
- Slight scarring from the laser resurfacing process
However, under the expert care of Dr. Foster, these side effects can be quickly addressed if not fully prevented, thanks to his delicate and expert care.
To avoid triggering the above side effects or exacerbating them further, it’s recommended that you avoid using any lotions or skin care products that may irritate your face. If irritation should occur, ice packs and over-the-counter pain relievers can help soothe most discomfort.
And if you don’t experience any of these side effects, then the recovery time is quite fast! Just be sure to always wear sun protection!
