JUVÉDERM®

Reduce the signs of aging with Juvéderm

With age, most people notice that their face takes on “weight” at the lower region. A youthful face is more V-shaped, with structure and contours angling from wider to narrower as we look down the face. An aging face is shaped more like a square; its sharper angles along the jawline soften and sag and lines form around the nose and mouth.

The signs of aging can be dramatically reduced and even reversed through the strategic use of dermal fillers like Juvéderm.

What is Juvéderm?

Juvederm Toms River NJ

It may sound as though Juvéderm is a single product. In fact, the general name describes a family of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers that have been approved by the FDA for specific use. Inserting hyaluronic acid beneath the skin where lines and creases have formed, as well as where volume has diminished, is an excellent remedy for the signs of aging.

This is because hyaluronic acid is a natural ingredient that typically supports the plumpness of skin through moisture. Natural particles of this substance that are produced by the body bind to water molecules to achieve a desirable effect. In the skin, this effect is volume and softness. In the joints, it is buffering for shock-absorption. Hyaluronic acid is also valuable to the sustained moisture of the eyes.

How does Juvéderm work?

Juvéderm products are all formulated with hyaluronic acid. Each filler is unique due to its extent of cross-linking. This term describes how tightly the particles of hyaluronic acid are bound within the gel base of a given filler. Binding these particles as tightly as possible adds value to treatment because cross-linking enables hyaluronic acid to remain in place for more extended periods of time.

Adding Juvéderm beneath the skin adds structure where it has been lost. That structure comes in part by the thickness of the filler itself and in part by the water content that is drawn into the tissue by hyaluronic acid.

Who is a good candidate for Juvéderm?

Because Juvéderm is a hyaluronic acid line of products, most people are excellent candidates for treatment. There is no risk of allergic response because hyaluronic acid already exists in the body. Dermal fillers are not appropriate for women who are pregnant or nursing or for patients with an active skin infection. It is also essential to have realistic expectations of what dermal fillers like Juvéderm can do. This treatment is ideal for smoothing lines and creases but will not tighten sagging skin.

What to Expect During Treatment

Juvéderm treatment is very quick. If necessary, topical numbing cream can be applied to the skin before treatment. If this is done, the cream will need to stay on the skin for a few minutes to reach effectiveness. Using a tiny needle, we inject small amounts of the agreed-upon product into the target area. After the filler has been injected, the area will be gently rubbed to disperse the fluid adequately through the crease or cheek contour.

Is there any downtime after treatment?

The side effects of dermal filler treatment are mild enough that most people return to their usual routine right after their appointment with us. Slight swelling and redness may be noticed where injections were given. Some patients develop minor bruising. The insertion of hyaluronic acid into superficial tissue may also result in palpable lumps or visible bumps.

We do our best to observe the state of the skin during treatment so lumps and bumps can be smoothed out immediately. Over time, as the product degrades, this side effect decreases.

How many Juvéderm injections will I need?

In one treatment session, a number of injections may be performed. This depends on the desired outcome and area being treated. For example, only a few injections may be needed to smooth smile lines around the nose and mouth. If the cheeks are also being treated in the same visit, several more injections will take place.

Patient comfort is important to us. Juvéderm products do contain a local anesthetic. However, we are also happy to discuss the use of a topical numbing cream before treatment. Because the needle-size is very small for filler injections, most patients tolerate treatment very well without topical anesthetic.

Juvéderm Results

The results of Juvéderm injections are immediately visible, which allows us to achieve a smooth, consistent appearance. Over time, as the product naturally breaks down, retreatment may be scheduled.
