DYSPORT® in Manasquan, NJ

Dysport Logo

DYSPORT® is an FDA-approved injection treatment that reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by relaxing facial muscles on the forehead. Similar to BOTOX® Cosmetic, DYSPORT® is injected directly into the site of wrinkles to prevent the underlying muscles from contracting. However, DYSPORT® can diffuse muscles one to three centimeters from the injection point, while Botox can only reach as far as one centimeter, allowing for results that reach further areas with just a single injection.

DYSPORT® was developed in Europe during the early 1990s, and has been used successfully for several years. It has also been used in the US under the name Reloxin, but was mandated to be FDA approved under its original name, DYSPORT®. In April 2009, DYSPORT® was approved by the FDA for use in the US and is expected to rival Botox, the most popular cosmetic procedure, with its convenience and long-lasting results.

What can Dysport® treat?

In addition to treating fine lines and wrinkles, DYSPORT® can also be used to relieve excessive underarm sweating, and treat the symptoms of cervical dystonia, such as neck pain and abnormal head position.

DYSPORT® is made from a protein that is extracted from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, the same protein used in Botox injections. This substance was originally used to control motor disorders and involuntary muscle spasms by immobilizing the targeted muscles.

How Do I Know If I Am A Candidate Dysport®?

It can be difficult to determine which treatment is right for what complaint. That’s what we’re here for! When you visit FosterMD Facial Plastic Surgery in Toms River or Manasquan, you can expect a thorough consultation with an experienced, licensed professional who has considerable training in the use of injectable treatments. By listening to your concerns and talking to you about your goals, your provider can determine the best way to move forward. They can explain what different products and services can accomplish and how they work, leaving the final decision fully in your hands.

Some of the common uses for Dysport® include:

  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Horizontal lines on the forehead
  • Neck wrinkles
  • Downturned corners of the mouth
  • Descending eyebrows

How Long Does Dysport® Treatment Take?

Your Dysport treatment shouldn’t take very long, even with a full consultation with your provider. You can expect to be done in less than an hour. The active portion of your visit, when your provider administers your injections, may take just 10 to 15 minutes.

Do Dysport® Injections Hurt?

No. Injectable treatments are performed using a very small needle. You can expect to feel a slight pinch. However, this is usually even milder than the pinch you feel when getting a flu shot or having your blood drawn. Each injection is very quick, so the discomfort that occurs passes almost immediately. After your treatment, you should feel completely normal, with no significant post-injection soreness.

What Side Effects Could Occur After Dysport® Injections?

There are a few side effects associated with Dysport injections. They are all quite mild, and they usually resolve in a matter of days. Some of the post-treatment sensations that may occur include itching at the injection sites, tenderness at injection sites, headache, nose or throat irritation, nausea, eyelid drooping or swelling, or upper respiratory tract infection.

Is Dysport® The Same As BOTOX®?

Dysport® and BOTOX® are made with the same active ingredient, botulinum toxin type A. This ingredient works by inhibiting the release of acetylcholine, a chemical that is integral to muscle movement. Without it, the targeted muscles relax, allowing wrinkles to smooth from the overlying skin. While both Dysport® and BOTOX® work in a similar manner, they differ in some pretty important ways. These include dosage and diffusion. Because Dysport can diffuse farther from the injection points than BOTOX, your provider will dose your treatment differently.

How Often Can I Get Dysport® Treatment?

Your body will naturally break down and eliminate the botulinum toxin over time. This happens at a different rate for every person. When the product dissolves, your muscles will return to a more movable, tightened state. Repeat treatments can keep this from causing significant cosmetic effects. You may schedule these touch-up treatments as early as 90 days after your initial appointment or may not need to come back for five or six months. It is recommended to wait at least 90 days before receiving more Dysport. This allows sufficient time for your body to flush the neurotoxin before introducing more into your system.

When will I see results?

The results of DYSPORT® injections are visible within one to seven days after treatment, with most patients seeing results on day three. With less protein than Botox, DYSPORT® is broken down more slowly by the body, and can provide results that last as long as 4 months. Dr. Foster will walk through what to expect through DYSPORT® treatment during your consultation.
